Online High Schools

Here is a link from the New York Post the other day. It describes the efforts in the adminstration of NYC public schools to institute a curriculum for online classes. In the future, that curriculum will allow for online degrees.

I for one do not believe that high school student have the time management skills to put this into action. I just wanted to hear if anyone else had any other thoughts or reactions.

Todd,

I know what you mean.

Additionally, I always question the socialization aspect of online schooling on the high school level? Although high school may not be the best time for all students, it is a time for learning how to work with others and socialize with individuals and groups who differ from you.

Any thoughts on this issue?

Yes I agree. I speak from my own personal high school experience. I was ill prepared to deal with time management skills that an online class would require.

Not only that, but seriously, how much actual nuts and bolts information do you retain from say your chemistry class sophomore year. The real learning at that adolescent stage is the learning you access from being around peers on a day-to-day basis not to mention your daily interactions with your teachers. In an online classroom setting, you are just not going to get that same substance.

Social skills will begin to retard and they will be ill prepared to enter society, because society will still function most effectively for those people who interact with other people.
